So I'm setting up an old Craigslist pick up 225 gal and it has pretty bad hard water stains. I e tried baking soda and vinegar to not much avail. King of dyi on YouTube suggests bar keeper friend. I'm hesitant to use as I don't want poisoned fish. Any experiences are greatly appreciated

I wish I would have tried that. I ended up using a lot of razor blades on the used 210 gallon I picked up.

bar keepers friend is great, it is cheap and easy to use. the acid is water soluble so you only need a good rinse or 2 to remove it from the tank. I found it work on better than any cleaning product on kitchen and bath tubs too.

If it's glass; I know that razor blades and 000 steel wool helped me.

We used to use muriatic acid at the pet store, straight up, on an algae cleaner sponge. Wear gloves and do it outside with fresh air. It will make the tank look brand new.
