I am getting a large tank. L shape 6foot sides 3 feet talk and 2feet deep front to back. Because of being tall cleaning won't be too much fun but still better than 4 feet. I plan to keep a couple rays in the tank and a number of other fish including my peacock bass and what ever else would be large enough to keep with them. I'll be looking for a fire eel for fun also. I so like the sand look allot it's very nice but I an trying to decide if I would rather just keep is as a bare bottom and be able to have a couple power heads just push any crud off the bottom. I know cleaning sand is not too bad but still over time you start to suck up a bit. I like the look of about 2 inches of sand. Maybe just put one inch to move it around allot?? Any and all ideas would be great. I an not doing gravel forsure.

Your rays will want sand, and they'll tend to push it around. Otherwise, there are all kinds of discussions on substrates -- as well as all kinds of opinions.

I have african cichlids, so I don't know if it applies - but I have sand substrate and I use a powerhead (in a 125g) to get fish waste into the water column and into the filter. Keeps the sand clean and my fish seem to like "playing" in the current. Don't know how that would work with rays, but just my .02

i think u should do sand. still should be able to use some powerheads to keep most of the waste off the bottom. and with the rays going to be mixing it all up most of the waste would most likely be kicked up into the water anyway. thats a big tank, and altho i don't have any experience with tanks like that. i think the look of having the sand, and keeping ur rays happy is worth the little extra needed to clean it. just my $.02 worth

I have sand in my current tank. Just trying to think if I want to put sand in the new tank or what I want to so.
