I was wondering if anyone done/ or thought about painting the bottom glass a sand-brown? What I was thinking is painting the back glass black and the bottom glass a light-brownish color and going bare bottom. Anyone done this and and have any pics?

I've seen pics of tanks done that way, much nicer than black. I've seen spray paint that has specks of darker color so that really replicated the look of sand, not sure who makes it but home depot has/had it.

There is a textured spray paint that looks like sand - I think Rustoleum makes it. Several different shades - my Walmart has it.

I used it w/o any problems. If you're painting the outside of the tank, it should't be an issue either way.

I use any type of spray paint on the bottom. For the backs of my tanks 55gals & up, I buy styrofoam insulation from Home Depot/Lowes, cut it to fit the back or sides of my tank and paint the insulation instead of the glass and tape it to the tank. That way I can change colors if I want & also it keeps electricity bills cheaper b/c the heaters have to work less.

I did the same thing with my 125. Painted the backround black, and the bottom an off white that's close in color to aragonite. I still use substrate, but the cichlids I keep are diggers, and I did NOT want to see pink insulation on the bottom of the tank when they moved all the sand. Works great and looks good!

Do you know if the rustoleum is fish tank safe like the krylon fusion?

I sincerely doubt it is (inside) tank safe. I have painted the bottom of my tanks as well and been fine but only the outside of the tank. I think the textured is an awesome idea though. I will do that for the pup tanks. Thanks guys for the idea!

To me, the textured idea seems like a waste because if you're only painting it in the outside, you're still going to have a glare and it won't look the way it should. I'm painting my 300 flat black on the inside today with Krylon fusion just because I can't stand seeing the reflections

The tanks I will be doing are bare bottom ray pup tanks. To keep the texture I am going to paint a piece of styrofoam and put it under the tank so the texture doesn't flatten against the glass. The styro will go in between the bracing of the tanks. BOOM, done..

Honestly, you can still see the texture if its on the glass only. It looks very close to sand. I got the lightest shade they make and I like it, but next time I'll go a little darker. The light shade washed out a little under my lights. I painted a 30gal I was using as a barebottom growout to see if I liked it.
