Sorry if it is a noob question,

but im having trouble finding info in this forum on keeping a bare bottom tank. What size tank is ok to do bare bottom, and is there any particular way of maintaining it??? I have tsn, rtc, and the hybrid. i am worried about them eating the gravel when feeding the pellets. all are under 8" long. Any info you guys have with experience would be great!!!!

Thanks in Advance!!!

im not sure on the cycling and keeping all your parameters in check, would imagine the substrate has something to do with this... i know after swapping out my large 20mm pebbles for coral sand all my fish seem happier and have got better colours come out. maybe having a large well established external filter would be good though...

I have 4 tanks running now and 3 are bare bottom. The one thing I can attest to is that bare bottom is 100% easier to keep clean. My one tank with gravel needs to be vacuumed everyday just to keep params acceptable

^^^ same thing im going through...i have two rtc and really want to decorate the tank with gravel, sand, coral and much but afraid they gonna mistaken the decors for food and eat them...so i simply have a bare bottom for them...IMO...a bare bottom tank does not need to have a certain size or dimension...just weather you want it to be decor or not...not sure if this helps...

I dont have a rtc but i have a blue catfish the us native in a 220 he is about 10" and eats shrimp pellets any sand he pics up he seems to spit out

someone had told me once that it was hard to do a bare bottom because there was no gravel for the bacterial to build up in... is this not an issue???

Substrate or gravel can hold some BB but not the majority. Most of the BB is housed in media which is in ur filter, think about 700gph passing thru the same space + air exchange.
