i was just wondering if you needed to increase filtration (more bio media contact) if you have a bare bottomed tank. i keep mostly poly's and as much as i like sand i don't want to have to deal w/ the vaccuming and replacing of it. i figured though that all those grains and space was a pretty large bio filter in its self. thanks

No need for extra filters In my opinion.. As long as your current filter system is handling the load you should be fine without as you were with substrate..

That is my opinion.. I changed nothing when i took out my substrate.. In fact my system is in my opinion.... Better :)

If you are removing substrate from a large tank it is beat to do it in stages of 1/3 or 1/2 at a time to let the filters biologics catch up ( as long as the filters bio-material is large enough, usually is).

Under or marginal filtration and the removal of a large quality of gravel substrate will cause the tank to go into a cycle again. Not as bad with sand.

If you have been without substrate for a while your good.

Sure does make cleaning easier huh? :D

Maybe we need artificial backgrounds and ground-grounds.

couldnt imagine not having my sand substrate...I have a couple powerheads in my 180 and never have to vacuum the sand.never...just my opinion

thanks. this is going to be for my 135 new setup but yeah i didn't want to deal w/ vaccuming substrate anymore.

oh and dr. joe i was actually considering making artificial ground :) i was going to post it in the DIY but this wouldn't be for a while since probably $$$
