Bare bottom rays? I have had my rays on sand for about 6 months and it looks great and they seem to love it but I went to bare bottom today. I did not want to but until I get my new tank next month with a sump I am running a canister and a HOB on my ray tank. both of them stopped working this week? I come home from work the other day to a god awful noise. It was my HOB running dry! I cleaned it and it is still alive! But there was a lot of sand in the bottom of it. so today I am doing maintenance on my tank and the canister is not pumping out any water! I immediately unplug it and take it apart to clean it. I cleaned it last week? (just the sponges and the bio was rinsed in tank water) so today I did the same thing but a puff of sand came out of the hose when I started it back up again?

Are my rays just kicking op a lot of sand because of the small tank my filters are sucking it all up? 55Gallon? ( I have been ridiculed on this site for my tank size but I am getting a 180 or 220 next month so save your breath I don’t want to hear it again)

My question it will my rays be fine going from sand to no sand? Iknow a lot of people run bare bottom but will it stress them out to switch?

A lot of people will say that you "killed off" a lot of your bacteria colonies by getting rid of the sand, but I don't think it will be that big of a deal. Just test daily and watch your levels for few weeks being prepared to do waterchanges. If you liked the sand have you thought about doing some form of prefilter?

I am fine with it for now iliked the sand and my new tank will have a sumpso iwillgo back to is soon.

bare bottom is nice. but my rays spend most the day digging, if they didn't have their sand i think they would be unhappy. they really seem to enjoy digging. this is just IMO i think bar bottoms fine. and fine sand is not! get pool filter sand or 3M

barebottom is perfect for rays.......

fine gravel is perfect for rays :D

ive heard of a member getting stung on here while sucking up some of his sand so watch out for that. theyll get used to it.
