I have no problem with bare tanks myself. But my tank are in my room so i like to have something to look at. The closest thing i have to a bare tank is a 15 gal fry growout with a deer skull in it and a floating plant. No food is wasted since it all just lands on the bottom, they are growly very fast. But wether u want bare or not is up to the user and is all about personal preference. I in no way shape or form think it is cruel.
but since people always want there tank to have the best water conditions , food ect dont you think a fish has a less enjoyable life and under more stress when there is no where to hide
Not all fish need to hide to feel secure. I've never seen those types of fish kept in bare tanks.
You only see big active fish that use all levels of the aquarium in bare tanks, thus, they don't feel stressed by not having a spot you wish they would hide under, but rather, enjoy the extra space to swim in their tank.
I don't know about completely bare, but since removing the excess thickets of plant material my fish have stopped trying to hide as much. They also don't freak out as much when I walk in the room, just rush the glass begging.
my preference is bare bottom i see what my rays eat... easier to clean and i just like it better and my fish have no problems with it my dats are stable and active my aros are fine and so are my rays
I would definitely keep a bare tank if the specimen that was in the tank was a rare species. Like Neoprodigy's golden barra. Or AshDavids new lungfish or barcas.
However if i was keeping a more common species i would decorate.
