just curious if barley straw could be used as an algae preventer in aquariums? i was considering placing an aquarium outside this summer, and wondering if you could put some in the sump...

I would not place an aquarium outside. Too many issues with that.

Barley straw won't do anything for green water algae. It will help break down string and hair algae. If I were using it in an aquarium setting, I would only use the liquid form. The small bales they come in will destroy water clarity. Make sure the pH is stable and you have mucho areation in the tank prior to adding. the tank will need extra areation as the algae breaksdown.

I've used it to good reults in my small pond but if it won't work on green water then maybe the tablets or the liquid will work.I've seen it in those forms in my catalogs.
