How common, how much should I expect to pay? The is a nearby petshop that has what they are calling "red devils" but these guys look exactly like every pic I've ever seen of a barred midas.

Likely a hybrid of some sort. I wouldn't pay more than $10-$15, depending on how small they are. There are very few pure red devils/midas/barred midas in the hobby. Most are a hybrid of any combination of these species.

Unless you are confident that the LFS is getting them from a reputable source you are most likely going to be getting a Midavil.

If you really want a true barred midas then I suggest going through Jeff Rapps or Don Conkel (although I don't know if Don sells them).

If they are in the 2-3 inch range chances are they are just R/D with immature coloring. If they are in the 4 inch range and still barred it is possible they are true barred.

All Midas and Red Devils start out as barred, while the true barred Midas and RD will stay barred throughout their whole life and the colored ones will slowly changed from barred to whatever colors as they get older. The ones from local petshops will surely change to colored specimens unless it's a reputable shop and they're marked as barred Midas.

On a side note, not quite sure how Petsmart does it but their Midas/RD turned colored at a very early age/size.
