hey guys, i need some help on my barred midas. I've had my male and female in a tank together and seemed like they paired up nicely but this evening my male started beating up the female, ripped off a few scales. They seemed to be doing fine cause they were digging up my gravel and seemed like they were building their nest but started going at it a few hours ago. Any help would be much appriciated..

Depending on the temperment of your fish you may have to leave a divider permanently. There can be many reasons why he might attack her. Some fish just turn on each other for some reason. How big of a tank do you have them in? What are the other occupants?

brown is good. sometimes you can put dither fish in there and it will keep him from beating on your female so much but I think a 90 would be a little small for that unless your fish are still small. you can look up breeding through a divider it might help you. basically you can put a small enough hole in the divider that the female can get through but the male can't. that way if she wants to visit she can but if she needs to get away it's possible as well.

i have a pair of texans where the male is pretty abusive and he killed one of his mates after breaking down the barrier. I put some bricks in that the new female could go hide in but he couldn't get to her. They seem to be getting along much better and she has a hiding place if she needs it.

Awesome! Thanks for the help. I guess I'll wait a couple days see if the eggs are fertilized or not. I just got these two pairs and didn't expect them to lay eggs this quick. My 90 was just to hold them for the moment cause I have a 120 setup and ready to go soon. Maybe I should wait a bit see if they actually hatch or not before transferring them? Anyways I had to put the divider back in and left the eggs with the female. Should it be with the male or female?

So you have two pairs or one pair? Just want to make sure I'm understanding right... 120 will be much better.. Well you could transfer the fish and leave the eggs with an airstone if you want. If it's the first spawn they may eat the eggs... Most people leave the eggs with the female when they are seperated I think but I have had male fish chase off the females and hatch the eggs alone.. How big are your fish?
