It seems like barred (black and white-ish) midas cichlids are rare. I think I read that they lose their barrs in the aquarium, but I've seen a you tube video showing otherwise. Has anyone kept them? Is there a difference from the barred midas to the orange/yellow ones? I know sometimes they are mislabeled as red devils.

Oh, also, it seems like they have a lot of personality, even if it is the angry kind. . . thoughts?

Barred midas (Amphilophus citranellum) don't lose their bars in the aquarium, but the colors between the bars in other Amphilophus species (amarillo, sagittae, and xiloaensis) does fade when kept in captivity. The barred varient is the same species as a normal citranellum, which is very similar to, and often hybridized with, the red devil (A. labiatum).

Hello, I see you are in Colorado. Mike's Killerfish (a LFS) in Denver does have some barred midas, if you are interested in getting some. There is also a MFK meet being planned there March 1st.

So the barred version and the yellow/orange/red version are the exact same species, only color morphs. . . If only LFS knew the scientific names of the fish they were selling. . . hmmm
