Just got this 4 inch fish sold as a Midas.

1. Is this a Midas?
2. Looks male to me. Thoughts?
3. Will he stay barred or will he peel?

The term Midas is kind of a generic term for about a dozen species in the genus Amphilophus, from the great lakes of Nicaragua, and there are a number of color morphs in each species, some are barred, some are not.
They all start out similar to the one directly below......but.....

some get orange, some get pink, some get creamscycle, some get black, some barred as they mature.
There is no way to know for sure what they will turn out like, unless you know their immediate ancestors, and what lake their ancestors came from.1708998485651.png.1708998066045.png1708998035762.png

I’ll be curious how this guy turns out.

Very unlikely. He'll probably "peel" as mentioned, still definitely small enough to still be coming.

As stated above, It's hard to tell for sure without knowing parentage. Check out tangled up in cichlids or cichlids of the America's for true barred midas. Anyway nice looking fish.
