Hello MFKs!
I have a client that I do remodeling for. There is a water/leak situation in the basement that I thought might just work out to go with the flow so to speak and build some sort of small aquatic pond. The house was built in the 30's / 40's. When you come down into the basement, there is a mound of dirt/concrete/rocks that forms part of the foundation of the house. There is a sump pump in the middle of the floor and a drain on the other side to remove water should it enter, but still the floor of the basement does get covered in water when it rains. After spending a few hours of "boring" observation during a rainstorm, I noticed that 99% of the water is coming from the back higher end of the wall down through and over a lot of the rocks, kind of forming a water fall. Supposedly someone added a weep pipe that was connected to a pvc pipe and directed to the sump pump but really does no good. After doing some research on digging around the foundation, adding in a french drain, waterproofing the foundation area, etc., the cost was well in the double K's.
Here's my thought. Would it be ok to create a cavern like pond with plants and fish along that wall area? Taking into consideration that outside water comes through the ground and into the holding (pond) area, filtration and areation would be needed, some kind of lighting, etc. Would Koi be ok in the pond? What kind of maintenance would there be?
This is an off the wall idea, but trying to think creatively and work with the environment instead of against it.
I do tiling and concrete work in addition to framing, painting, etc.
Ask any questions!
Thanks, Karen
