alright this is completely up in the air, but i'd like to put a basement pond in for my mom. she has a wide open basement that gets 0 use except for the washer and dryer. i'd like to build a cement pond that is 3x5x3 which on the conversion chart equal a little more than 330 gallons. i'm looking on lowes and thinking about getting a water pump for the filtration system i want to put in and should i get a pumps exactly what the pond is equal too or should i get a pump that would pump 4 times the recommended amount just like a regular fish tank. there isn't a big price difference between the pump sizes. my only fear is the pump being too powerful and shooting water out the top of the filter.

obviously i'd like to go as big as possible but being a college student, and having 0 experience on this pond building stuff i figured i'd start small
water quality should remain the same whether its a pond or aquarium. As for pump size it would depend on the bio load and fish type/quantity/size as to what your turnover rate would be. Bigger is always better or in this case more is better.
well what i was thinking was have a drain at the bottom, hooked up to a pump which ran into a rubbermaid tub filled with scrubbies, but the water would be pumped in from the bottom and out the top sort of like a water fall.
this is an amazing idea I had never even considered before reading this thread...I could have a micro large mouth bass pond in my basement....

i got the green light, it seems like this is going to be fairly cheap, however its looking like a few hundred, probably about a dollar per gallon, would it be wise to do this or just get her a 125?
I would say go for the 125 tank. I have no knowledge of your experience level either pond or tank but to go with the bottom drain setup in the pond is going to be difficult as you would either have to dig down(not even sure that is possible) or raise the pond up and support it for the under pond pipework.
As for the pump 2-3 times turn over per hour is more than enough depending on stocking level.
