OK my basement is a little cooler than upstairs but not by much.... although I filled up a tank last night with water that was around 75 degrees and today when I came home from work it was at like 65. Obvioulsy a heater is needed which is fine. Although I am going to be having 4 tanks down there and I don't want 4 heaters running like mad. Do heaters use a lot of power????

The tanks do not have lids, will adding glass or plastic lids make a difference in keeping the heat in???

Can something else be done to conserve heat that will actually make a difference???

Amount of power they use depends on the tank size, room temp, amount of insulation etc. But the heater is on a thermostat, so it only heats when it has to. If it's sized correctly for the tank it's only going to be switched on 20-50% of the time. So a 300watt heater may only really use 50-150 watts on average.

Yes. It will also reduce evaporation from the tank

Tape polystyrene sheeting to the back, sides and lid of the tank. That will cut down on the heat loss from the tank, meaning the heater needs to run less.

Cheers

Heaters use power like a large light bulb, so that's significant running 24 hours a day. It's worth it.
