How long do most of you or should a person have the basking lamp on during the day?
I currently am down to 1 mississippi map turtle (baby) about 1-2" in diameter and was wondering how long I should be leaving the basking lamp on during the day? is it vary from animal to animal? do they know when they've had enough?

12 hours a day and another 12 hours to sleep =)
yes they know when they've had enough

That also goes for the UVB bulb.

I've been running the UVB/Flourasnt bulb about 12-14 hours a day, and usually run the UVA/Basking lamp about 8-10hours a day...

also how long do most of your bulbs last? My first bulb lasted maybe a couple weeks IF that... and at 5-10bucks a bulb...geez....

Switch over to a ceramic heat emitter. They cost a lot to buy but I have one that is on 24 hours a day and its at least five years old.;)

Dont forget to replace the UVB bulbs every 6-12 months. Even if they still comme on, they wont be giving off the UVB rays nessesary for your little, sone to be big turtle.

well today I didn't spend the money for a ceramic, but split the difference and got a Zoo Med Halgen basking lamp yes I paid lps prices though I had a 2 dollar off coupon (whooo) pfft.. 18 bucks for a UVA halogen lamp or 19 for a 2pack of regular... the halogen stats... average of 2000 hours....so better than my couple weeks on a regular bulb... but I guess time will tell....
