Alright, so I have a 55 gallon
-Dimensions 48-12-18
-Flitration AC110- 500 GPH
I'm planning on selling my fish this weekend and picking up some natives. I'm gonna take out the sand and paint the bottom of the tank black like the back of the tank and take out some decor too, so the tank will be easier to clean (natives poo a lot right?)... Then I'm picking up some blue gills. How many should I get? and I can't get a bass because he'll outgrow the tank right? Tips and help would be appreciated, thanks.

I'll second everything redm18 said. I've gotten longears, warmouth, and redspots from Brian, they've all been healthy and done great. They're also much prettier tank fish than bluegill.

A 55 is great for a stream tank with longear sunfish and some big minnows and darters. Longears have small mouths, so they usually won't bother fish more than about 3" long.

USE SOME FORM OF SUBSTRAIT, SUNS N BASS BOTH DIG NESTS TO LAY EGGS AND IF THERE WILD THEY REALY WONT CARE FOR A BARE BOTTOM. AS FAR AS POOPING, THEY GO THE SAME AS ANY OTHER FISH. THINK OF THE FISH YOURE GETTING NOT YOUR SELF

That is a good point but I do like the look of bare bottom much better, and it will provide better conditions for the fish because I'll be able to keep the tank cleaner like I said. Plus, I'm not looking to breed them anyways. Is it easy to breed them though?

I have to second everything Noto said... Zimmerman's fish are by far the BEST natives available on the web. I have a 55 gal. w / a colony of his Central Longears, and they are remarkaby BEAUTIFUL!!! I've got some local Lahontan Redside Shiners in with them, and they get along great. The fish that Brian offers will have plenty of time to grow up, and he always includes extras. Bluegills can have a lot of personality, but they tend to become NITRATE FACTORIES in no time, and the bioload will have you scrubbing algae from the tank once a week or more, in no time at all. Bass are even worse, and will require an even larger environment, not to mention their overly aggressive nature. I also tend to agree with the need for substrate. It will enable the use of actual live plants too, which is a definate bonus for all Centrarchids. Best of luck to you.

Ben.

I think I'm going to get some norther long ears from Brian once I get rid of my fish this weekend. If I'm gonna get plants I'lll put them in small pots with some plant substrate so I don't need to cover the entire bottom with substrate.
