Very much south..
I know I am entering into ( for me at least ) uncharted waters...I have 5 young LM Basses. They are starting to eat eagerly non live ( yet frozen food ) and act lively throughout the tank.

They so much remind me of Cichlas ( in appearance and behaviour ). They are Centrarchidae and, on the other hand, Cichlas are Cichlidade..

What is the difference between both these Bass species that makes them belong to a different family?

The 2 families are actually kinda close, to some degree. I mean, look at the differences between an oscar and a sunfish - bluegill, green sunnie, etc.

the species have a resemblence in body structure but peacock bass cannot live in the same enviornment as LMB for the peacock bass will require higher tempratures. Cichla arnt in the same tree and LMB i can tell you that but they are alike. If your intrested in a PB and a LMB in the same tank it is possible ive seen it done but you will have to have temps in the 82-84 which may be a little stressful for your LMB via versa.

How warm are the lakes in the southern US where LMB flourish? I would think that they would be in the low 80's in the summer.

pbass grow at a much faster rate and need heated water. lmb can do without heat. its generally harder to take care of pbass because they are very special eating and stuff like that. they are sensitive to water parameters as well. lmb do really well in a wide variety of settings

Peacock Bass and Largemouth Bass look similar because they are adapted for similar modes of life - to swallow large food items with their voluminous mouths.

i live in SD a southern area of the US and let me say that its not 80s in winter its at 60s 65s best. and i think the LMB here have adapted.

That's a no brainer. I said summer not winter;)
