Hi, Im new to the fish keeping trade and I just got a 75 gallon (guessing) tank from my cousins. I am a huge bass fishermen, so what else would I want to put in my tank but my favorite fish..BASS! Now, I dont know where to even start on setting up this tank for my bass. So far I have had the tank for about 9 days with water, a brand new filter, and a air stone airing it 24/7 to get the chlorine out of the water. The tank looks cystal clear. Now here are my questions, where do I buy a bass in Modesto California, what do I need to do to get my tank ready for my new fish, and any contributions and opinions would be awesome. Thanks guys :]

Hello there. About bass, It depends on what kind of bass you are talking about. I am guessing your talking about a largemouth bass?

Why not just catch a small one and put it in a tank? I did that for my pond. My want to check to see if thats legal in your area.

Before you go any further, ask yourself this: What are you going to do with your bass when it outgrows your 75? An adult bass needs at least a 200 gallon tank. It is illegal (and just generally a bad idea) to return a fish to the wild. So, your options are (1) buy a bigger tank, (2) give the fish away to someone with a suitable tank, and (3) kill the fish. If none of those sound good, don't get a bass.

I believe you are allowed to keep sunfish (including bluegill) in CA. They would be more suitable for your tank. In any case, the first thing to do is get your tank "cycled". There's a helpful guide here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=207575. Just ignore the part about heating the tank to 85 F, there's no need for you to buy a heater.

Check the cycle guide like Noto said, also since it is illegal to re-release the fish out of the water you have 3 options: euthanizing the fish when it gets too big, Donating it to a place or person that accepts fish (a college, bass proshops/cabelas, a aquarium, someone who has a private pond).

I grow out natives for my friend who has a private pond.

I would check the legality first, but maybe you could get ahold of a Sacramento Perch or a Warmouth (very Bass like).
