I see everyone uses the plastic pot scrubbers for filtration, I was wondering if the bath sponges are considered equal or less effective? When I examined them they actually look like there may be more surface area then the pot scrubbers.

A loofah sponge will degrade rather quickly if left submerged. It was a living plant at one time.

Now if you found a plastic fake loofah then that would be fine. As plastic will take 20-30 thousand years to degrade. And by then your fish may have died.

I think cost has alot to do with it as well. You can get a case of 100 scrubbies from doitbest com for 15 bucks. And every loofah I see is a few bucks for one.

why not use jap mat?

thats a good link thanks for that

. They are 15.48 for a case of 12 packs of 8. Or 96 scrubbies for 15.48. And as long as you have a phelps hardware in your town they ship them to the store for free and you just drop by and pick them up. Look around on the internet for discount coupons as well. Every time I have ordered I have been able to find a code somewhere online for a percentage off. Last time it was 35% off. So the cases cost me about 10 bucks per 96 scrubbies. Or right around 10 cents each.

I have ordered a few cases 3 times in the last 2 years.

Just check on the site to see if you have a store around you and make sure they do the (ship to store) . And your good to go.
