California laws are tricky; be sure to check them out before you start taking fish home.

This book: http://www.ucpress.edu/books/pages/1837001.php should help out a lot with identification. Your local library may have one, if you don't want to buy your own copy.

There are three major groups of fish in California's streams: natives, invasive exotics, and stocked exotics. Many of the true natives are now rare and protected. Invasive exotics may be banned from possession as well. This leaves you with stocked exotics, which are mainly eastern North American species such as mosquitofish, various sunfish, black basses, and catfish. Most of the threads in the coldwater forum regard these species.
