A while ago someone told be that if a package was labeled Bay Scallops and not just "Scallops" that the were Ray wing stamped with a cookie like cutter. I went to an Aldi today and they had Bay Scallops and on the back of the package the ingredient says Argopecten Irradians, so that is a Scallop right? I have'nt had time to do much googling yet.

Argopecten Irradians..never herd of this ray stamping stuff...

Never heard of the ray stamping thing. On a side note, none of my sharks ever liked scallops.

LOL. It was a coworker that lived in Florida and says it's true, but I dont know first hand. I know I don't care for them.

my mom's boyfriend was in the food business for a while and he said that they would get scallops that were actually shark meat cut into the shape of a scallop.

Bay scallops are the smaller dime-sized scallops, while sea scallops are larger 1 1/2 inch size. Its common for unscrupulous fish sellers or restaurants to use ray meat, cookie-cut into round shapes. Passed off as sea scallops, customers usually cant tell the difference. The only real issue of using 'fake' scallops for food is that you are paying more for an inexpensive product.

If are served scallops in a restaurant and they are all identically sized and perfectly round, you might be getting duped.

I wondered about them being all the same size like the bag i bought over the weekend, 1lb for 3.99. Well the rays love them and who knows they might be keeping a piece of their family in them!
