I went to my local fish store and bought a bumblebee catfish, but the label on the tank was very confusing. It claimed it was the Microglanis iheringi, which implies a 2.5 inch max size. Next to this name though it claimed it grew to 10 inches, refering to Pseudopimelodus bufonius. Naturally this very small catfish hides alot so I cannot get a good picture. How can I tell if this cat will grow to be a beast or just a few inches?

easiest way is to look at the images and write ups on planet catfish and compare, there are many species referred to as bb catfish inc the jelly bb and Asian bb plus all the close relatives!

^^ As Justarn said referencing planet catfish should help. If I was you I'd also look into Batrochoglanis raninus as they too are often times referred to as Bumblebee cats and are more likely to be confused at smaller sizes as iheringi then bufonius. You could also post a pic here and we can try to help you I.D. the cat.

the easiest way is to look at the tail, the BB cat (Microglanis iheringi,) has a v shaped tail fin while the bumblebee jelly cats (Batrochoglanis raninus) have a rounded tail and darker markings, also the head of the latter and the mouth are both larger in comparison to a SA BB Cat.

My BB jelly cat (Batrochoglanis raninus) were advertised as iheringi but after a quick look on planet catfish it was easy to tell they had them marked up wrong, the growth rate on the raninus is quite quick so it dosn't take long to be sure mine were around the 3-4" mark from 2" in a matter of weeks.

Agree with the above.

As for a photo, if you are not willing to pull it out and into a phototank, you could net it and bring it up to the front glass and photograph.

i think by the tail and markings that is Microglanis iheringi,
