So I came home to witness this horror for Halloween. Is his eye going to recover or it will go blind for sure, im leaning towards it going blind. What a disAster... I've been trying to train my gatf to a prepared diet rather than live feeders and now this happened...

First off, sorry to hear...

I know this is a really bad thing but wow he looks really sweet with the red eye! Haha

I dont know much about ray eye injuries, but even if he goes blind in that eye I don't think it will effect him very much. Rays primarily rely on scent and electrical signals for feeding.

First of all what a beautiful ray!

This injury looks a whole lot worse than it actually is, I'm pretty confident it will return to normal in a fairly quick time, I have seen the condition before but its too many years since, I remember a happy ending that's all.

No need for medication.

All the best!

Looking at it, even zoomed in, I can't see any actual puncture marks. Is there a visible entry wound? A lot of time a big heme like that is going to be from blunt-force type trauma. Either way, as long as the retina is intact and if the corneA isn't majorly scarred once the heme resolves, it's more likely to get the vision back than not. Unless it was a sting, in which case all bets are off.

I have had this happen before to one of my BD's and it healed fine within a week or so. From memory it happened because another ray sucked on the eye.

Thank you everyone for the replies and yes he's definitely a good looker. I'm not sure if it is the GATF but he did seem to take a shot at the aparacio the other night, took a little night from the rim. The BD eyes blood is going down albeit still visible, feeding aggressively still. Stingrays ability to recover has been surprising to me. On a side note, perhaps I should re introduce some large feeders for the gatf.. he's beaten up the rtgg badly too now. Just really want to avoid damage to the stingrays.

This happened to one of my male BD's a while back. As others have stated it was from being stuck by another ray. Actually a disk injury that I barely noticed until the eye started fill with blood like that. I want to say it took less than two weeks to heal. His sight (to my knowledge) is unaffected and is on his second litter since the injury. Clean water and I'm sure he'll be fine.
