Be really careful on Craigslist. I almost bought a nightmare 240G tank.

A few months ago, I was looking for a 240G acrylic tank and stand. I found one on Craigslist for $500.
Here's my old thread about it: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/f...nk-on-CraigsList-What-Would-You-Do&highlight=

Basically, the whole thing was suspicious. When I got there, the seller didn't want to fill up the tank all the way to the top. He had these 1" acrylic strips glued onto each edge. He said he did that to make it stronger, not because it had ever leaked. He had a sump for the tank, but he didn't want to start the sump because he "didn't want to clean the sump." So I never got to see the tank full all the way to the top and I never got to see the sump working. I was kind of stupid and I really needed a tank, so I gave him a small deposit to hold the tank for me. But I eventually walked away from the deal because people here on MFK said it sounded too shady.

Anyway, a month passes and I'm still looking for a 240G acrylic tank. I found another one on Craigslist and I went to Seller #2's house to check it out. When I got there, I noticed that it was the exact same tank that I had almost bought a month earlier. It had the same 1" acrylic strips on it as before. The guy was trying to sell it for only $350. It sounded too good to be true, and it was. The tank was empty when I got there. He looked nervous when I asked him questions like if it had ever leaked and why he didn't have any fish in it anymore.

The thing that was really trippy was that he had wood floors and I noticed that there was some moderate water damage to his floors (the boards were wavy like when water gets under them.) I also saw in another room that he had a big wet/dry vacuum. So I'm pretty sure that he set up the tank and it leaked all over his floors. And now he was trying to sell it for a bargain price to dump it off on the next guy.

So be careful when you're buying a tank on Craigslist. Look underneath the stand and around the floor for signs of leaks/water damage. If the seller seems nervous or you just have a bad suspicion about the deal, walk away because there will be other tanks that show up. I still can't believe that 2 different guys tried to rip me off on Craigslist.

For 350 I'd jump on the deal. At this point you know what you're getting into, a tank that leaks... Strip it down, do a good job and reseal it and you'll be fine.
I bought my 150 on craigslist for $100. It held water perfectly for about a month before leaking. I resealed it and haven't had any problems since then. There are lots of people that can give advise on sealing a tank on here, but the main thing to remember is to take your time, get all the old silicone out, and do a good job.
I too feel bad for the the guy that had it leak on him, but you can still benefit from this. Cost to clean out the old silicone if you don't have anything is around $30. Figure $8 for a box cutter and some squared off razors, $20 for a 4 pack of GE silicone, and a couple bucks for a cheap caulk gun.
I'm not trying to tell you you made a bad decision (as long as you're happy that is all that matters), but I'm just trying to point out the tank can be salvaged.

You can't silicone Acrylic. It doesn't stick to it like it does to glass. Acrylic/Plastic Glass takes a special compound to glue it together. :)

Buyer beware going into any transaction, not just ones that originate on craigslist.

My bad I missed that it was an acrylic tank.
