i was wondering if it would be safe to get sand from the beach and put it in a fresh water tank
if it is how do i wash it before putting it into my tank?

It's safe just be sure to rinse it real good and make sure it's not coral sand (just check the ph after leaving it in a tub of water for a bit if the ph changes alot it's probably coral sand) otherwise it's fine.

I assume you mean beach sand from a saltwater body if it's freshwater than theres no chance it's coral sand and all you need to do is give it a good rinse.

Put it in a very tall tub outside, take the garden hose and put your thumb over half the end as to really blast the sand to get any organic matter out, i did this several times with my sand (which i also got from a beach although a freshwater one). Just let the water fill up and flow over the edge taking all the debris with it. Try not to let any sand flow over the edge although it shouldn't, most sand is very heavy. I would give it several rinses and let it sit in the chlorinated tapwater between rinsing to kill off any microorganisms.

i wouldnt recommend it. beach sand is diff, and can change your ph, etc. just buy play sand its cheap and looks the same.
