As said what beach? I assume ocean. Is it even legal to collect sand? Anyways if it is ocean what is it made out of, shells is traditional but of course it could be some rock that dumps tons of crud or changes the ph in a bad way. Also if it is from the ocean make sure to rinse it very well since I would guess there would be too much salt for even the saltier cichlids.
Never tried it because of toxins/contaminates that might be in the sand. I've used larger rocks/shells etc. from beaches and had no problems. I washed them in a mild bleach solution and rinsed the heck out of them later. How big is the tank you need to fill? If it is not very big I would suggest just buying sand, but still rinse it well.
try pool filter sand
it come in white and beach sand color
i have it in my tank and is only $10 for a 50lb bag
i have 150lb on my 220 gallon tank
im still working on my tank, in a few month ill have it all set and done
I looked at using beach sand from a nice beach near us, but found that it packs down too hard when wet, almost like concrete. Used playsand WELL washed and is great, easy for them to dig and dig and dig and dig and DIG!
