Just wondering if anyone has used or currently uses Bead filters on some of their larger setups.

I've been reading up on these, and it seems that they were initially designed for aquaculture/tropical fish breeding, as opposed to their more widely used applications of Koi keeping

They seem to have a very small foot print in comparison to filtration capacity.

Also, does anyone use FW Protein Skimmers?

i have 1 each aqua-ultraviolet 1000g models on my 650 and 500..small size with great bio capacity..i highly recomend them..also had a 2000g model on my pond but it wont fit under aquarium stands so it not being used..simply too tall to fit under the stand..

all the ones ive seen have been HUGE and very expencive. ive been told they are the best bio filter you can get.

great filters...

cjfrontlovr how do you have them set up, since they need to be pump fed? Do you have a pump in a sump supplying the bead filter? then returning back to the sump?

I've been looking at a few models, namely the Ultrabead Econobead, and the Elecro Powerbead - from £500 plus.

I was looking on http://www.absolute-koi.com/cat8.html

As i was also looking at the Cloverleaf Fluid Bed Filter, and some freshwater Protein Skimmers on there...

I know its a koi site, but I'm sure it does just the same job!

i know some will disagree, but i have it piped directlly from 6" above the bottom of tank directly through a 4000gph pump into the filter and back into the tank via 4 returns.it is purely bio filtration..mechanical is done through my wet/drys.i can litterally drain my 650g tank in a half hour just by turning the valvle to back wash and it drains the tank down for easy water changes and also cleans the filter at the same time..i connect an 11/2" fire hose to the drain connection of the filter and let er rip.
i only have the aqua-ultraviolet models..mike csx recommended them and that was enough for me..

What do you use in your wet/dry filters

My idea is to still have a sump, with inlet and heaters in chamber 1, chamber 2 will have mechanical filtration, something like japmat/sponge, chamber 3 - possibly ceramic ring, then chamber 4, return pump, bypassing a bead filter, may split the return after the bead filter, to go back to chamber 1, as need quite a powerful pump for the bead filters. Also considering a fluid bed filter instead of a bead filter, or both.

Undecided still on the protein skimmers...

look at how neoprodigy did his 600 gallon... so simple and perfect...
