Hi everyone,

Just looking for some advice regarding my bean animal overflow setup on my 300 gallon system. I would like to run more flow through it.

My x3 drain lines are 1" and I have x2 3/4" returns.
Right now I have everything dialed in perfect running 18GPM (1080gph).
My full siphon valve is open all the way, if I pump any more flow my durso goes into full siphon .

I couldn't find much info but has anyone tried utilizing the emergency drain? Is this a big no no?
I would like to increase my flow and I had been contemplating running 2 full siphon drains and using the emergency as a durso.

I have a fairly large bioload, my sump is 100 gallons and is capable of handling much more flow. Just curious if I should try and attempt it or leave it be.

Any advice is appreciated,
Thank you

Hi A AMG_NUT
The emergency drain is there for an emergency. :WHOA:If you use it for flow then you might as well have a herbie. If you feel comfortable running without an emergency that's up to you, I personally would not do it. I always envision wet floors and expensive repairs. Then again I have (3) 1.5" drains and (4) 3/4" returns in my 300G so I don't have to worry about low flow.

What does your overflow look like? Picture would help out, but if the overflow is external to the tank, you could drill another hole in the overflow on the side, not the bottom, and use that side as the emergency? Might be hard to envision so here's a few pictures of what I'm thinking.

1st picture you can see I have a full siphon in the center, slower trick on the left/back of overflow, and emergency overflow in the front/right of the overflow box. IMG-0172.jpg

What if you drilled a hole where I am placing this PVC pipe in the picture below, and used that as an emergency overflow? This would allow you to use the current vertical overflow for a siphon instead? Not sure what your setup looks like though, so I don't know if that would work in your situation.

But as the previous post stated, I would NOT recommend using the current emergency overflow as a siphon without creating another emergency overflow. That always ends up badly.
