Beani, Islantum, Grammode

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would not recommend they get housed together, as they are all pretty mean. I would keep, only with strong dividers, and in a 200+ gallon tank.

How much tank space would you guys think would be needed to house these 3 full grown. No pairs.

My old grammode got to be 6"+ and did well in a 265 gallon community cichlid tank. The only other guapote was an 8" female managuense. My roommate had a 5" islantum from Rapps that wasn't terribly vicious in a 55 gallon (I forget his tankmates). The only one that I have no experience with is the Beani, who I've read at 8-10" is going to be the nastiest and biggest of the bunch (ordering one from Rapps?). It's trial and error with crafty cichlids, but if it's going to work I don't think think you need a 200 gallon aquarium with that bunch, probably just a 75 with lots of driftwood and rockwork territory. It's more about luck than volume., IMHO.

i wouldn't try keeping a beani with other cichlids in any case,as they are pretty rare (in uk at least ) and deserve a tank of their/his own

I've had two 7" male beani, from my experience they are only super aggressive to their own kind and will bloat if stressed. Both my males died of bloat becaues they were being pushed around by a slightly smaller freddy yellow head, i would recommend to put them in a species only tank. I have istlanum and they hate eachother and cannot be kept together unless the pair is ready to breed, I haven't kept them in a community so i won't be able to comment on that till fatjoe gets me a wild pair so i can put my current f? in a community tank. Grammodes are very mean but several members here keep them in a community tank, i believe they will be fine in a large enough tank. As for the tank size you would need to house them all together, i don't know but i will tell you that a 75gal tank would be fine for only one of any of these fish.

Damn sorry to hear that. It's crazy how you hear about bloat issues w/ Beani even at sizes like 7" or more. I personally own a male and female beani who absolutely hate each other. They definitely stress each other through the divider but I've had no issues with bloat so far..knock on wood:wall: No luck w/ breeding so far as the male just pounds on the female whenever I get them to try. I personally believe that they need to have their own tank to themselves or at least divided from a community in a large tank. The lesser the stress..the better.

I'd be interested to hear from people who have had success with them in a community cichlid tank.

I currently have all three. They grew up together but are separated now. They are better off having their own tanks.
