my female bearded dragon lost her mate a good 3 years ago or so due to kidney related problems but the last month shes been digging in the substrate lots even down to the wood and still continues scratching, its really annoying to hear, i thought she was just too hot or something,
they have bred before and laid eggs in the box of compost etc i know how its done, but earlier today i was cleaning her out and found a hard dried up obviously dead egg, it made me really sad to think it died, but shes been alone for SO LONG.

do bearded dragons just lay infertile eggs when they have no males to firtlisise them? if i wanted to get her a male to breed with how small could i get away with adding one? cause although she is nicely aged she is only about 12" long and very friendly in demener.

sorry to ask so many questions, thanks in advance guys

Nope, they absolutely lay infertile eggs.

Add another lay box so she doesn't get egg bound, and go ahead and increase her calcium intake.

I think its adsolutley safe to assume the egg was completly infertile, 3 years its a long time. And yes many female reptiles will lay eggs independently of the presence of a male. I think you should think if its really worth trying to find her a mate to breed. Its your female old? If so the stress of coping with a new tank mate and then the egg producing and laying process may prove too much for her. This is very hard on the female well being, body mass and calcium levels, specialy on a older or younger animal. Over bred females live considerably shorter of their normal longevity. If she is old or even a kind of midle aged, let her be, enjoy her as a pet and get yourself a pair of juvenile dragons for future breeding:)

yeah id rather she had a nice long life, shes never done this before so i wondered if it was healthy.
another question,

i had an idea the other day, i have calcium powder at all times, but my dragon never drinks from a bowl, so i have to every day or so manuely spray water onto her head with a spray bottle for it to drip on her mouth as she opens it.
if i mixed the calcium powder into the water and sprayed that, would that work? cause if its doable i think it would be a brilliant way to give her calcium as she dosnt get fed live so much these days

Dunno about the water calcium, Coura should know. However, instead of spraying every day, why not just soaking her once or twice a week in lukewarm water?
