I recently bought a 5-6 in fahaka at my local lfs about 3 days ago. It was in a 10 gal or 15 gal holding tank and its pretty beat up but there seems to be no signs of disease. It is very active and eats healthy but the only problem is that it looks beat up and not showing full bright colors cuz it looks beat up. I treated it with some pimafix and melafix just in case but only one dosage. Should i continue the dosage for a week like it says on the bottle? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

What do you mean by "beat up"? Is it missing fins? Is it really thin? If possible, try and post a picture. Was it being housed with other fahakas?

Has it eaten yet?

just provide superior water quality and it should heal on its own, you could also dose with the mela/pima but i think a half dose for a week will be sufficient. it could also take quite a while for its colors to improve, as it took atleast a month til mine got used to his surroundings, and even then the brilliant red/tellow markings didnt come out all the time untill he hit 8-9".

Good advice.

oh yea since he was in a little 10-15 gallon tank at like 5-6 inches, is his growth stunted already?

If you haven't heard yet, that is a myth. Fishes don't 'grow to their tank size'. Their growth stunts usually due to poor water/diet during the early/developmental stage of life.

Give it a while for it's colours.

also, what are you feeding it?

Hopefully not feeders. There are piscivore puffers but the fahaka is not one of them.

lol, fahakas will eat anything even resembling fish. mine gets crabs and snails so i can have tank mates but if i dont feed on time they are lunch

Being in a small tank and the fact that puffers are messy eater. Keep a extra clean tank. Change the water 3-4x a week

The water quality it was in in the lfs was not that bad it was clear and no signs of any bad water it was just too small for him. So he can still grow in my big clean tank?
