Bee Keeping

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my friends EX is, he seemed to be into it. I think it was more for the profit then anything tho, never seemed to complain about it tho.

It is fun, there is nothing quite like having your hand completely covered in bees.

I have been studing Varroa destructor with a few locals. I dont keep the bees myself but am looking into how fast it is spreading and possible treatments. If my property was a bit larger I would totally have a few hives.

Thats cool, We use Apistan to control mites, is there a better way you know of to control them? I understand what you are saying about not having enough property, we are keeping our hives at my in-laws, they have 20 acres and about 250 apple trees.:naughty:

We are more researching the effects of temperatures on the mite colonies. Here in Utah we have very hot and dry summers and very cold and wet winters. It seems the cold does have an effect on the might colonies, but we are looking for more correlation between possible humidity levels, etc. There are several factors that correspond with the mites breeding cycles and as assumed, cold does slow it down a bit.

Anyways, didnt mean to go a bit off topic.

Its always fun studying Hymenoptera.

Sounds fun, keep me updated on what you find. Anytime you can manage/control a pest without chemicals it is a good thing!

Agreed, though it seems chems are far better in this situation. You know the devastation the mites cause... Wish this could get nipped in the bud faster.

How many hives do you have?
