so...my cousin had a pacu before and i remember them feeding it beef heart. I was just wondering is it nutritious for cichlids/fish? would it be a great addition to their daily diet? or should i not feed them this?

Store bought, frozen, prepared beef heart for fish is OK part of the time. Or, if you're ambitious, you can buy unprepared beef heart from a butcher and make your own.

i feed it sometimes as a treat, my mota make a ridiculous mess with it though.

hm...ic thanks for the info :D

Not recommend when compared to other similar frozen food such as Brine/Mysis Shrimp, Krill, Bloodworms, etc.

Regardless of fat content, beef is not part of a fishes diet in the wild.

I see what you mean....so I'am better off with blood worms then?

by mess do you mean cloudy or little pieces floating around the tank?

What kinds of cichlids are you going to be feeding the beefheart to?

it's fine as a treat for some of the more carniverous, predatory cichlids that are used to a lot of protein in their diet. definitely don't want to use it as an every day, staple part of the diet though...once a week at most imo. it is great for growth. :)

I keep seeing people who don't feed beef heart say it is bad, but they have just read that somewhere and have no practical expereince. I have been using it for 30 years, I've never had a fish get too fat and die from it, I've had more fish bloat from pellets than anything else. I've raised 1,000 of discus strictly on beefheart. It's cheap, clean, easy to prepare and fish love it, I feed it to all my big predatory fish at least 4-5 times a week, there is nothing better to put weight and size on a fish. Ken

just want to clarify...when I was talking about beefheart, i was talking about store-bought, frozen, pre-prepared fish food beefheart. there are lots of home made recipes for fish food that call for parts of beefheart, krill, veggies etc that I plan to try sometime <hopefully soon> and use on an every day basis
