Hi all im thinking of feeding my 8 inch ck beef heart, he shares the tank with 2 polypterus delhezi and 1 12inch poly. senegalus. Do i need to cook the beef heart? and will the polys. be ok with it?

No you dont cook it just trim off the fat and cut it into whatever size you need and freeze it. I learned rather quickly that i put the cut up pieces into a freezer bag one at a time while it was lying flat on the counter then placed it into the freezer the same way (flat ). If you just toss it into a bag and freeze it you will soon learn how difficult it is to get a frozen brick of beefheart apart.
As far as the poly's, ALL of mine love beefheart.

Depending on the size of your fish you can take beef heart and put it through a meat grinder, or have the meat market do it (although they may not trim off the fat for you). After it is ground, place enough of it in a ziploc bag until you can flatten the entire bag to about 1/4" or so, place it on a pan and freeze it. Then you can easily break off chunks of it as needed. Depending on what types of fish you want to feed you can also grind up a little fresh spinach with it before freezing.

BTW once the polys figure out that it is edible they will likely love it. They rarely turn down any food except maybe flake food. Mine are pigs!

This seems to be an acquired taste. I carefully prepared my fresh beefheart and my CK just let if float around the tank until I had to throw the smelly stuff away! I tried it a few more times but finally gave up in the end, he has since turned into a vegetarian so maybe he is just a sissy.

my bichir likes beefheart not sure how you would cook it any way but just feed it raw freezing it probly would help

I think people exagerate in feeding mamal protein to their fish on such a scale. Fish organisms are not equipped to deal with such protein on a regular basis, I believe...

totally correct- although it was popular years ago i think it leads to fatty liver degeneration over time and a shortened life:nilly: :)
