IMO, waste of time. Not much surface area. For large filters, you'd be better off getting unused floor stripper pads and cutting them into pizza wedges. They're coarse polyetylene and have high compression rates as compared torigid pond filter materials. But, at much lower prices.

For smaller filters, pot scrubbies will provide more surfae area than many of the available bio-balls on the market.

Anything that has a surface can be used as filter media, all you are doing is providing somewhere for bacteria to grow. You could use your old G.I.Joes if you wanted to, as long as you're providing a surface for bacteria to grow on it will work, to a certain degree at least. The question you need to ask is how efficient it will be. As you can see from Oddballs table the surface area varies greatly, and usually the more efficient the media is the more expensive it gets, pot scrubbies being the obvious exception.
 
Could pot scrubbies be used in a canister filter or are they more limited to sumps?

What about Seachem Matrix? You don't need a whole lot and it has anaerobic properties that break down nitrates. I'm getting ready to start using the smaller (denitrate) and larger (pond matrix) versions of it. I wish I'd have bought Matrix instead of what I did get, but oh well.
