I am new to pike cichlids but from what I have been reading and getting an impression from is that if you stuff your Cren., everyday or often, they will develope a beer belly? Is this true?

Yes it is. But they can trim down quickly. As far as Im concerned fat pikes are the BEST. To take a quote from Smokie And The Bandit, Bandit states; " Cowboys love fat calves". Im not a cowboy or anything and I dont really know where Im going with this, but its all I can think of off hand to demonstrate my point.

Not really, its generally only the gravid, adult females that get the chunky belly. Generally you won't see male pikes with the nice robust belly like the females will have. Its just the way they are. Almost every adult female pike I have seen, regardless of how she is fed, will have that nice plump belly.

Generally though, you need to only feed your pikes to the point of satiation, which means till their belly start to bulge. Getting them too full can be hazardous to their health sometimes, so its best to avoid that. Giving them a fasting period every other day or every two days is a good idea as well as it will allow them to completely digest their food.

If you give it Newcastle, it will definitely happen.

I agree with you Peanut_Power although the majority of my experience is with Dwarf Pikes. I don't fast my fish on any deliberate schedule but I might not be into my fish at times and just get them fed once a day occasionally intsead of three times a day. I keep them around 84F and use mostly live blackworms and frozen bloodworms which all seem to go through them quickly, as one would expect of a carnivore. I am also trying to breed them so they are getting a lot of extra attention.
