After haveing some trouble getting a high quality fiid for the o's i was wondering if beef heart is a good everyday food for them, and what way do i prepare it,plus what are some things i can add to make it more "appitizing" and healthy for the oscars

the beef heart i use is pre packed in little cubes u just push 1 out the foil and its dinner time .i think hikari gold is a good every day food for any cichlid try some earthworms they will pig out lol.

oh i give them earth worms whenever i can and they FLIP,i am giveing them hikari oscar pellets now but thats almost gone and at 15$ for an 8oz bag, there has to be a better way,if i were to go beefheart i have no problem prepareing it myself i just don't want to be giveing the oscar a unstable diet,i tryed ordering it from a website at 4$ for the same size bad, naturally i was gonna get a good few bags but they won't ship to canada anymore, and it was only last year that i ordered my pump from them,

Beef heart is NOT a good staple. It is too high in fat. Also the protien makes them grow abnormally fast and that isn't that good for them. If your willing to spend a little money on them then use worms and crickets.

I feed Beef heart now and again.. Chad is correct though.. The fat content in beef heart is very high, and you can actually Kill Your O's if you feed every day , as they cannot digest it fast enough :) But i vary the diet, I feed Brine shrimp, Pellets,Beef heart, feeders, worms grasshoppers, crickets... Oh and cheaper pellets are koi pond pellets... IN the big bags :) Compare the labels :) They are not much different :)

i don't have a problem spending money on them, pretty much all my $ goes on them, but right now the money isn't there to spend if you know what i mean

usually i dig my own worms but that only works for the summer months,i've even tryed to get a little worm farm on the go but it didn't work out,as for crickets i should be able to get them in the pet stores year round but once again $ problems,so i'm trying to find the most efficent method without comprimizeing the health of the fish, and no getting rid of them is definitly not an option,i'l give up eating(which woulden't hurt for a while:ROFL: )before i get rid of them

i am also waiting on a friend of mine who has an aquarium company here to see if he can get me good prices on food so hopefully that will work out

i bought a think of pond pellets yesterday and they won't eat them, and i know for a fact that they will eat the whold thing of them cause they where like the consistancy of a cheese, but i will check out some better pond pellets,

As others have said, beef heart is not a good staple. It's a good treat though. I buy it by the pound at the butcher, puree it with fresh garlic and my Discus and Africans love it.

You could make your own food and freeze it. There are a lot of recipes out there. I think it was last month's TFH had a couple of good recipes. The initial investment is high but you'll have food for a long time.

thats what i'm looking for, does anybody have a recipe or recipe's,or links to recipies:D ,i would like to make a very healthy food for them

Two words OMEGA ONE cichlid pellets...ok so 4 words..

I agree that omega one is very good. I have been fond of hikari cichlid gold for a while now. Another thing you could try is breeding crickets. I know they have alot of things online about breeding them, but the only thing is your going to want to keep it somewhere where you don't often go because they smell. Another thing that I heard is easy to breed is meal worms I think. They turn into beetles and make babies. Good luck. BTW the better quality food you give them the less they eat becuase it fills them more quickly.
