hmmmm i dont know where to start. and the title is a bit misleading since it implies a thread to "start building" a SW aquarium.

i really am tempted to create a saltwater tank.

Target: 22gal or more tank with ATS for filter... mostly SPS/LPS including ZOAS.

Plus which supports my decision:
1. i like challenges
2. this is somewhat my dream
3. i think i am very capable on my FW since most i get to handle breeds
4. i am still single and no distractions (except work) xD
5. i have enough budget to go around with this project (i think)

Minus:
1. i like in the Philippines and currently knows no SW or REEFer contact locally
2. i have talked with some LFS owners and they discourage me to go SW
3. my only option to equipment and resources are online and i have had a trauma early this year in ordering online.
4. though i have a budget, online (and most) items for SW seems expensive

so any advice if i should or should not?

i hope no flaming here guys... thanks...

Before you buy a single piece of equipment research as much as you can. I recommend a beginer book on salt water fish. Once you have a better understanding then you can choose what type of tank you want to setup. Reef or fish only.I just switched over myself a few months back. Got bored with my freshwater. This is alot more challenging and fun. Just post any other questions you have and there are alot of well expirenced people here who are willing to help.

Marine aquatics is actually very popular in the Philippines...Plenty of options to purchase from good suppliers online, at reasonable cost, and you have all the experience you need right here on MFK to help you through the setup and maintenance of the tank...

I would definately venture into SW after I felt like I had mastered FW for the most part I made the switch and I am happy I have. Extraordinary fish, a challenge, and just alot of fun. Only thing I don't like is my arms gets tired from mixing salt LOL

Don't get me wrong I love FW and in the future plan a return to it with a 125 Mississippi river tank but for now I'm loving SW.

i am not a naysayer (not much! ;)) but i'd appreciate it Reefscape if you can refer me to some of those Philippine hobbyists (if possible)?

i do have friends near the ocean (lots of islands in the Philippines :naughty:) and i have a cousin in the government who can tell me the legality of fish, corals and localities here (so pretty much within the law if ever)...

online? hmmmm i guess i will have to get over my trauma since almost all accessories for this hobby is available online :irked:

i've done the reading and yes this community if great :)

so, any more advice?
