Hey Gar keepers, I wanted to add a gar to my 300gal 8x2x2.5 tank. However I don't know which one would be the best one to keep for that size tank. Also the tankmates would be rays and that's it. If I could get some gars that would be good for that size tank please let me know and I will start researching to make my decision. Thanks

You can have pretty much any species of gar in there besides alligator gars. As far as beginner species go, Florida gars are your best bet; they're easy to care for, cheap, and readily available. Check out the various stickies on the care of the different species.

Cool thanks. However if the exceeds 24" s. how. CAn I keep them in my 8x2x2 the width is 24"s. so are you saying most gars don't get 24"s or bigger? And besides a Florida gar what else would work in my ray tank

highly doubtful you'll have a captive FLG that gets bigger than 24" unless you purchase a large wild-caught individual...so really, it's not something to be concerned with in all practicality. if you are into the rarer species tropical gar is also a good choice (although harder to find and much more expensive). good luck--

Oh, I thought that it was 2.5' wide as you indicated in your original post. A Florida gar will still work as would a tropical gar or shortnose gar although you're way better off starting with a Florida gar than a shortnose gar for sure. The suggested minimum aquarium size for the typical adult Florida gar is a standard 180 gallon aquarium, so I'd say that you'll be fine when it comes to space.
