Over the rainbow
I've been looking into bichirs for bit now and I was thinking about getting one. They seem like really neat fish. But, before I do I wanna ask some questions. Are they interactive fish, or are they gonna sit their all day like my previous wolf fish :irked:? Are their any differences in species, temperment and size wise? Also what are the most common and uncommon species? Thanks any info will be helpful.

The most common are also the most active and interactive, those would be the senegals. they definitely move more than wolfs, and still look quite nice when they get large (doesn't hurt they're typically the cheapest kind as well) - there are huge differences in size, senegals typically max about 10-12" and most upper jaw species (delhezi, palmas, retropinnis, etc) can hit 14"+, However Weeksi and Ornates can get 20+ inches. Lower Jaw species can get very large, even bigger than the ornate, so unless you have a big tank watch out for endlicheri's and other low jaws.

temperment wise it really depends on the amount of territory, hiding places, consistent feeding, size difference between fish, etc

definitely rewarding to keep, and truly an addiction

Senegals are cool. They swim up and down, all over the tank while my del and ornate prefers the bottom. I woke up one day and saw him floating on the surface, 3 sec later he dive all the way down to the bottom like a submarine.

Comparing a poly to a wolf fish, for me polys hands down i cant explain it im just crazy abt polys, and they cant do anything wrong in my eyes. Get one poly to start and see how it goes maybe its for you maybe its not. I cant explain to you how it is to keep polys you are just going to have to exprience it. Be warned that it is very addictive

im a bichir addict too!

i love my poly hes pretty active but i hear some like to hide alot

What species is that? Palma polli? I've seen those in my LFS and wanted to get one but its unlabelled and I don't want to get one which could outgrow my tank.

i have a few of them, they are a great fish, sometimes they sit around, sometimes they are active, they are pretty decent hunters, they are an ancient fish, i love em, you should try them!

polys are awesome fish. Sometime they can be inactive. But when they are active (which is very common) they swim around swiftly and gracefully!
