I bought some Nics to grow out and breed. I've ended up with 6 females and 3 males about 3-4 inches now. They have pretty much paired off from what I can tell. The keepers will be housed alone in a 75. I have a 40 gallon breeder for fry. My LFS has agreed to take the extras for store credit which is OK with me.

My questions are: Should I keep just two or two pair to be sure the have bonded? This will be my first time intentionally breeding so any pointers will be appreciated.

Two things:

1. Are you planning on the 40 gallon breeder to be the tank you will move the fry into when they get too large/old to be with the parents? Or will the 40 be for the actual spawning, egg laying, egg hatching, and initial nurturing with the parents?

The reason why I ask is...if the 40 is going to be only for the fry (after being transferred from the "main tank" with the parents in it)...I've read that if the fry tank is too large...sometimes the fry can have a hard time finding the food. Of course once all the fry get larger...then transferring to a larger tank (the 40) will be needed for the additional room.

2. I have a question. What sort of deal do you have with your LFS for the extra fish in terms of store credit?

I currently have a tank of 2 month old fantail goldfish...and my Jack Dempsey's eggs just hatched (a lot of them). So I was wondering what sort of deal you have with your LFS...and wanted to see what sort of deal I can get from my LFS for my "little ones" when they are ready.

Thanks:)

I would use a smaller tank for the fry. Yes it's a good tank but its a lot of room for fry to get lost. I just to move my fry from a 40 breeder to a 15 cause they weren't getting enough food and growing really slow.

I searched for a while before finding the main store I made my deal with. Other stores offered store credit (one of them would only give me tore credit towards more livestock.....which is stupid). But I know the owner of this new store here in Orlando, FL and she is all about creating sustainable populations, so she is offering me cash, just like if I were a wholesaler. It's awesome because I am not restricted to purchasing just what they can get in (livestock or merchandise). And what she can't take, another store will give me store credit towards anything they have. I plan on using the store credit to improve filtration, lighting, etc, buying foods, and to grow my number of tanks. The cash will be for some fish stuff, but also for some fun spending money. :)

To be honest, I never thought about the fry not finding food issue. I have a 10 gallon that I can add. It will be under the 75 so I can siphon the fry into the tank (hopefully). I will be trading for hardware unless I see a fish that really strikes my fancy. I've traded fish before and honestly, the deals always favor the LFS but they're in business to sell fish so my expectations are low.
