Yo, right now i have a 46gallon tank and I have catfish and a Ck. There going to get big, my red tail already grew and i've had him for a week! For large tanks, im thinking of going at least 500gallons, what kind of filtration system would I use? Would I also need a reservior for it? Im only familiar with smaller tanks. If im going to upgrade to that size of a tank, I want to get an early jump on learning and researching all the componets to it. Thanks everyone.

Not sure if your wanting a DYI filtration or some kind of filtration that is good for that 500G of your future tank. If you were to ask me, I'd put 2 Fluval FX5. Best to over filter than under filter.

Two fluval's huh. Is there any commerical filtration system i could use? Yeah, 500 is the minium, i might bump it up to 1,000gallons :D. Also, where would one get acrylic sheets?

You could look at larger pond filters IMO though it'd be best if you just made a sump of your own or got a trash can and filled it with bio media. Hell outgrow ur current tank in probablly less then a month. Ii got mine at 2in in june and now he's almost 18. Fluvals are great for mechanical filtration but where ur gunna run into trouble is the biological filtration, the amount of waste rtc,s produce is ridiculous. Get a good sump to control ur ammonia and nitrates and all. And as for your knife, be prepared to seperate him from your rtc before he becomes a meal, rtcs don't have tank mates, just snacks they're saving for later

He better not even think about it! I keep all my fish fed but they are young and small. If i raise them together, like im doing, the red tail will still want to eat him? They chill out together under the same rock lol. SO I need a sump to? Could I put that under the tank or off to the side? I need to research this more ha.

Yes he will eat your fish its only a matter of time or size should I say. You need a crash course in many areas if you truly want to care for that beast. I myself have learned this through many tank upgrades and many dollers spent and still spending. Mine is currently 5 mo old in a 300 that I'm hoping will last till my 800 is done which will only be a growout. Good luck though as they are truly awesome fish who deserve a truly awesome home

I've never bought a aylic clear sheet before but I have asked companies on the price of one to see how feasble my dream and test tank ideas where.

I had a company called A&C Plastics, Inc give me a price on a four foot tall two inch thick sheet that would be eight feet wide for
1265.00ea. But they said that any sheet bigger would need to be custom made.
