I've decided to breed my own fish, at first just minnows for my turtle, so I could be sure that he wasn't getting unhealthy fish from the pet store, but I can't seem to do it.

I read a post on here that outlines how to breed rosy red minnows, however mine aren't breeding. I was just wondering if anybody had any helpful tips that may help.
Also, I was thinking about trying to breed guppies, as I read that they were one of the easiest to breed. Would this be a good idea for a beginning breeder to start with?

I only ask because I want to be sure that I do it right and I also want to be sure that I will be able to provide proper care for the fish. If either of these aren't good beginner fish please let me know.

Guppies and platy are very easy! I specifically ask for already pregnant females when I go to my LFS, and they are more than happy to oblige.
Just make sure you give the fry plenty of places to hide, otherwise you're only breeding feeders for your feeders!
Good luck and keep us posted!

guppies are excellent for first timers!!
if you feed them flake alternate with BBS or mosquito larvae as this would boost their nutrional content for your turtle.

Thank you everyone! I'll be going to pick up probably 1 male and 1 female of both convicts and guppies tomorrow.

One more question though.
I have two 5 gallon tanks that I was going to set aside for the feeders. Would it be okay to breed in these since there will only be two fish in each? It isn't that big of a deal if it isnt as I've somehow managed to inherit about 6 ten gallon tanks, however setting them up take a whole lot more room than 5 gallons.

How long is the gestation period/when should I expect them to start breeding?
