N e one got a vid or pics of the behaviour of loache breeding by chance...

I have 8 Cl's and they were all doing fine for the last few days-

I noticed last night some weird behaviour between two of them-

Not sure if the guys were fighting or trying to breed.....

So I'm looking for all possible info on this subject please-
N e help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks AK

It's highly unlikely that your cl were trying to breed. They're not mature enough to breed and also breeding in home aquaria is almost next to impossible without the aid of hormones. What you're describing is typical cl behavior though. The two were most likely fighting for the alpha loach position. CL do this once in a while and it's usually accompanied by loud clicking noises and also graying out of the colors.

I'm fine with that-
I just want to know whats going on is all-

Can you possibly describe more of this behaviour please-
I have no clue on the clicking noises....But they turned extremely dull in coloration.....And were rubbing each-other like crazy,Other than that there was alot of mouth to mouth behaviour going between the two-----Alot of circling and so on-----This went on for along time....

I'm just curious---As previously stated I'm new to these guys---If something needs to be switched-I need to know----If it's just for dominace-I'm fine with that also...

Sounds like a fight for the alpha position in your tank. The winner will end up being "grayed-out" than the loser.

They're fine and what you just describe is how they establish dominance. It happens from time to time and nothing to really worry about. It's actually very interesting to watch. I think youtube or loaches.com has a video of this behavior. The clicking noise you'll notice it sooner or later. They do this a lot especially during feeding time when you feed them larger or meaty foods.

When I turn the lights out, I have seen my loaches dance with each other. It seems to be the same ones who are always dancing together.

Loaches are so entertaining. lol

Although I have seen evidence of them carrying eggs as small as 4", they are not sexually mature until they are quite a bit larger.

I am also quite new keeping CL's and have been fortunate enough to acquire 5 7-9" wild specimens bringing my group up to 12. Before I added 2 XXL females yesterday i had a very dominant 9" male. I never realised CL's had a heirachy. Also I had noticed he has a more overall charcoal colouration on him.

The big females have been in for a about a day and already ive noticed more activity from the group, what can expect behavoural wise with this addition? Will there be a challenge for Alpha Loach position?

P.S I recommend feeding mussels & frozen lancefish my CL's go wild for them.

Thanks
Al
