Has anyone had a crazy thought of putting a sump behind the tank rather than below??

Here is my thought.......

Gonna build a dual 75g stand (side by side 8' long)

So why not make the stand say 10" deeper (28") and place the sump in that place. According to GARF 48"x10"x20" = 42g total volume.

However by doing this would increase the amount of water you could have in the sump, as well as eliminate the possibility of overflow. Also no head loss for height so you could buy based on the actual flow rate rather than trying to figure out the head loss etc...etc... Could also use like a HOB filter and push the water into it and just have it higher than the rim of the tank.

Many possibilities... gonna play with some ideas..

This thought started as a crazy idea for a really over complicated overflow setup for my 75, but if I am going to go to this extreme then might as well make it the sump.

Anyone have thoughts on this???

Are you planning on building a seperate sump or partitioning off part of your tank?

No it would be separate. My thought is to use 1/4" acrylic. I know with the height 3/8" should be used, but 1 it would have internal braces to eliminate bowing, plus location would stop any bowing also. Think VERY large HOB filter.

Reason I am thinking of this is that my stand for the 2 75's will be book shelves also and do not want to lose space for books because of a sump.

If I can talk the wife into it I may try this weekend. Was gonna build one of conner's DIY canister filters, but............:naughty:

I have a pic of the back of one of my tanks that uses a built in wet/dry - not sure if it would help but I don't see any reason why your idea wouldn't work.

:grinyes: Post please

Thanks
