Is it even possible to keep a beluga sturgeon in a private pond? I've been wondering this for a while and I want to know if it could be done but i doubt it since they can get 29' long. Anybody heard of someone doing it?

I don't know much about sturgeon, but at 29' long I'd say you'd need a lake not a pond. I can only imagine what kind of appetite it would have, how would you feed it?

Definately a lake, would be a pet for the multi-millionares, think of the filtration...Would probably have to give it a ready supply of large live fish for it to eat amoungst other live foods...
Either way though, IMHO i don't think its a fish that should really be kept in captivity at all. I think if someone was rich enough to give this fish a decent home, they should donate money to trusts/charities fighting saving the species instead.

lets see...

1. probably illegal to import
2. probably even more illegal to keep since it is critically endangered.
3. Belugas are not the same as other sturgeons. They are morphologically different so they are not in the genus Acipenser. The scientific name is Huso huso and they live in brackish to full strength saltwater in the inland seas all of their lives.
4. you need a huge brackish to saltwater pond/lagoon.
5. You need to make sure you don't have neighbors that like to eat caviar.
6. you need to make sure that it doesn't jump out of the pond and die.
7. you need to watch out for fish eating birds like herons

we got a few in at the store, 2 of them. Acclimated really well, ate everything we gave them, and they were about 6 inches or so. Pretty neat. I dont know if they were beluga tho, and since they only cost like $30 a doubt it. but they were neat.

I am 99% sure that they aren't belugas though. Unlike other sturgeons with bony plates, the beluga's is sort of under the skin. ie the skin is smoother than the other sturgeons.

there is a beluga sturgeon in the tenn. aquarium.
