When u treat Ur tank with meds that will harm Ur BB, how do u save Ur BB. Can u pull Ur media out and keep the BB alive. After treating you just place back in tank. If you do this, how do u stop from reintroducing disease back into tank.

To my knowledge, meds do not harm beneficial bacteria. When treating w/ certain meds, you might want to not use carbon (if you are). But never remove the biological media.

Really? I thought stuff like clout would wipe BB out

Nah, it's ok for the BB. Not so good for fish when used too often. BB is even safe if you use a UV sterilizer, which is something I'm considering when I add another canister filter.

there are plenty of meds that will destroy your BB lol...methylene blue...malachite green...maracyn...any med that is geared towards a gram-positive bacteria is going to have some effect on your cycle if used. It might be minimal, might be detrimental, all depends on a multitude of other factors as well.

That's what I thought. Does clout attack negative or positive or neither. BB is negative correct?

But that would defeat the whole purpose. Using a med that would make conditions hard for fish heal. In therory, if you destroy the BB, you run the risk of ammonia going up. Every med I've used has said safe for BB.
But I don't use meds so much. Prevention is always best, so I keep up on water changes and feed a balanced diet (NLS pellets). Also use aquarium salt when needed. I've had recent success using epsom salt soaked food to treat bloat. So I try to avoid meds altogether.

I believe there are both positive and negative varieties...I'm by no means a microbiologist but I was always under the impression a gram-positive medication would be worse on your bacteria cultures.
