Does anybody know if there's a such thing as a non-dangerous worm that could be intentionally introduced into the substrate in a planted tank to reproduce and provide occasional food for a mormyrid? He needs small amounts of food frequently, and I was wondering if there was a way to grow a little of that (like, the occasional treat for him when he digs) naturally in the tank. I figured maybe they'd eat some of the plant matter I've got growing in there to survive, but I really got no idea if such a species even exists outside of my occasional worm-fantasies.

Yeah, i think your best bet would be the cali blackworms...

You can also get a good culture of live scuds (Gammarus) growing in the tank. They'll eat anything still edible in feces and detritus, the mormyrid will have a plentiful supply of live foods, and the population will endure constant foraging by survivors hiding under rocks, driftwood, plant roots, etc.

There are over 100 different species of Gammarus in the US and they can be found in nearly every state. For warm-water tanks, you may want to solicit our SOCAL members to catch you a bunch.

+1 on the blackworms. my baby snapper loves to dig n his substrate after a snack... they multiply like crazy 2. thought i sucked most of em up with my gravel vac and they jus keep coming back!

Oddball, do you know if these are available in Asia? specifically Hong Kong? and any more info on these little guys? they look interesting...

Shandong Hongji Biology Technology Co Ltd in Binzhou supplies artemia and gammarus cysts in Asia. I found only protected cave-dwelling freshwater gammarus species in and around HK. Most locally found species are marine and found all around shallow areas of HK harbor.
