What is the benefit to drilling your tank for a sump system versus simply setting up a siphon? Does it let WAY more water flow or something? Is it 100% worth drilling your tank? Thanks.

you don't have too worry about a siphon break on the overflow of a drilled tank. i think the gph is determined by the bulkhead/drain hole size.

I have never had to restart my overflow siphons (I've had them running for several years). I use the "U" tube shaped siphons and they work great. The only benefit of drilling the bottom of the tank is that you don't have hoses hanging out the back of the tank. Also if you drill a tank make sure that the glass is not tempered.

It is mostly about accessibility and reliability. Not having the lines running down the back of the tank.

The drilled overflow drains will flow a "bit" more when you consider losses due to restriction in the plumbing.

Thanks for the answers, guys. I'm not too concerned about some piping down the back of the tank, so it sounds like I'll just set up an overflow with siphon.

Go with the U tube style overflows, I bought a tank with a different style overflow that came with a pump and it sucks because it is dependent on the pump to maintain the overflow over long periods of time, and the pump breaks a lot.
